Disabled Women

Barriers to getting help

In both the disabled and non-disabled communities, most abuse is perpetrated by a person known to the woman. But as a disabled women, you may depend on your abuser for care and assistance in your everyday life; your abuser may be in total control of your money, access to other people and access to medical care. You may not have access to information about existing support services for women who have experienced violence and you may feel that you can't leave your situation to seek refuge because of lack of accessible transport.

Violence can cause disability

Physical violence can result in disability and can cause permanent physical damage. Violence can cause loss of vision, loss of mobility, damage to limbs, loss of hearing. All forms of abuse are emotionally traumatic and can leave psychological scars, from which a woman may take a long time to recover.
