Rape & Sexual Assault

Sexual violence takes many forms

Many women suffer sexual violence during their lives. Sexual violence takes many forms and may include threats of violence, pressurised sex, 'flashing', obscene phone calls, sexual harassment, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual assault.

Has this happened to you or someone you know?

If you have been raped or sexually assaulted, you may experience a range of emotions - fear, anger, anxiety, calm, in control. Women who have been raped or sexually assaulted do not react in the same way, however you react, that is the right way for you.

On this page, there is information about organisations that can provide you with help and support to make the best decision for you.

All kinds of women experience sexual violence

Sexual violence against women is much more common than people realise and happens to women of all classes, ages, cultures, backgrounds, religions, sexualities, whether disabled or able-bodied.

Do you work in the sex industry?

Women who work in prostitution, or any part of the sex industry experience violence daily. SWAP (Supporting Women Abused in Prostitution) is an organisation which specifically supports women in prostitution who have experienced rape or sexual assault. See under Prostitution for more information.
