Comic Relief

Comic relief has supported work around domestic abuse for a number of years and this year, for the first time will be also considering applications from groups working with male survivors of domestic abuse and for work tackling abuse in same sex relationships. Comic Relief will no longer support applications for core costs of refuge services (as this funding is now available thorugh Supporting People), but will focus its funding on outreach services to people experiencing abuse or at risk of further abuse. This work will include raising awareness of services available, as well as providing direct support to survivors.

There are two programmes, the Main Programme and the Special Programme which is focusing on 'Improving provision for women survivors with additional support needs.' This will include women with addictions, mental health problems or disabilities.

Who can apply?
Comic Relief gives grants to voluntary organisations and self-help groups in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with particular attention given to parts of the UK which often miss out on funding, especially towns and cities outside London, and rural areas. They welcome applications from small community projects and larger organisations.

Any work funded must be charitable and most of the funding goes to registered charities. However, you do not have to be a registered charity, as long as the work you are planning to do has charitable aims.

What level of grants are available
Average grant awarded in 2002 was £62,000 for a three year project. Generally trustees will not award grants of more than £90,000 over three years unless the work has a very significant effect or shows a new way of working.

Larger grants may be available under the Special Programme.

Application deadline
Deadlines for summary applications, full application deadlines and dates for decisions from the trustees can be found on the Comic Relief website.
